EDWARD HALL
Memorial Lettercarver
I have been carving letters since leaving college in 1995. From here I have worked for various well-established monumental stone firms in the south.
After a few years I had the opportunity to work for an artist based in London called Belinda Eade, who inspired me to have a more artistic approach to memorials.
Not long after working in London, another door opened which led to working in the British Museums new reading room for lettering artist Martin Cook. I learnt a great deal about letter forms and design from Martin who gave me memorial work as well as his knowledge and guidance.
Upon moving back to Dorset in 2001, my college lecturer and artist letter carver Andrew Whittle provided some interesting work, one especially stands out for me as it meant living in a caravan for 5 weeks in the middle of Park Lane. This was working on the Animals in war monument in the centre of London.
For a short while I have lectured in letter carving and the importance of traditional techniques and letter forms.
My main ethos is to create a personal memorial – not working from a brochure and fitting the inscription to a commercial shape.
I believe that the words lead to the design of the entire memorial to create a bespoke and beautiful memorial for your loved one.
